Self-assessment Exercises

Match the numbers correctly with each action strategy on SHD, according to the statement of the third column

Targeted program strategy 1.Brings indicators of the most vulnerable groups closer to those of other social groups, or extends access to a public service to the socially worst-off.
Gap reduction strategy 2. Involves comprehensive efforts intended to impact on the health of the entire population, including groups in different social strata.
Gradient strategy 3. Identifies a target population segment and monitors the outcomes being attained as the program develops.

What problems can be identified in each one of the strategies to reduce health inequities? Match the number correctly with each action strategy on SHD, according to the statement of the third column.

Targeted program strategy 1. In general, these efforts may be more costly and take longer, making it impossible to monitor health outcomes in some cases.
Gap reduction strategy 2. This strategy does bring about results, but it also involves specific efforts, since it does not have any impact on other social groups or other determinants.
Gradient strategy

3. This strategy is extensively used and may well be aligned with other social programs. However, it has its limitations, since its beneficiaries are a subgroup accounting for only a small percentage of the population and its specific problems. In other words, it may not help reduce inequity because it neither integrates action on other structural or intermediary factors nor is it targeted to other social groups.
